The angry neighbour

I am currently really angry! I separate my waste – one box recycling, one food waste bin and a normal bin. And every couple of days, when I empty my food bin, I get angrier. The food waste bins outside are always filled with normal rubbish or recycling. Is it so difficult? And if someone can’t be bothered to separate their own waste, why do they have to ruin it for me? If there is any other waste than food waste in the bin the garbage collector will empty the food waste into the normal waste. And what’s so wrong about that?

Normal food waste is composted and new soil is created, therefore the resource is recycled into a new usable product. During the process CO2 is produced, which is not perfect, but much better than the methane produced by food waste in the air sealed landfills. Methane is a much more dangerous greenhouse gas than carbon, which makes the composting of food waste the more sustainable solution. And therefore we have to separate our waste!

But why does it not work here in Maryhill, Glasgow? Is it lack of education or laziness? Let’s have a look to Germany.

The garbage collectors won’t take unsorted waste! And therefore neighbours get angry with anyone not sorting their waste, because someone has to go through the bin and sort it eventually, for it to be collected. Angry notes at bins and watchful eyes trained any so lazy person not to throw their plastic in the food bin.

I go and write some angry notes now…
