Cork

At the London Design Fair 2016 I started being fascinated by this material. After looking into it I am of the opinion that cork is an extremely underused material. It is very light weight, it is pretty stable, it is fire retardant, water resistant and non-allergenic. It is elastic, buoyant and nearly impermeable. It is good for thermal and acoustic insulation and it has nice natural look and a non-slip surface. It resists mold and bacteria and is absolutely food safe. And the plus plus…it is very sustainable and fully recyclable. To sustain to cork forest in (mainly) Portugal, the trees have the be regularly peeled, where the tree itself is being kept alive. It is a business which lives of planting and looking after trees! After the end of life of a cork product, the cork can be cut up and pressed into new shapes.
